Remix and Mash Up Challenges

There are some great opportunities for remixing and mashing up data and content. If you know of other challenges drop us a line and we'll list them here.

The NZTA_Remix Competition - Safer Journeys for Teens

The NZTA has launched a competition for Year 9 - 13 secondary students with a theme of ‘Safer Journeys for Teens' Entry window runs from 1 September to 31 October 2012.

The competition is in two parts:

  • To create an infographic, mashup, creative remix, or a literature remix (based on the works of Shakespeare) using content and data from NZTA websites and publications.
  • The second part is to present or engage with students at your school with the entry you have made, and provide evidence of having undertaken this.

Startup Weekend: The 2012 Mix & Mash Open Data Category

Data mashup aficionados may know of Startup Weekend - where skilled people meet and race the clock to create great technical tools and business kits. A Mix & Mash, LINZ and iWantMyName sponsored Open Data Prize was up for grabs this winter at Startup Weekends in Wellington and Palmerston North. Entries that utilised NZ open data from data.govt.nz, and demonstrably contribute to environmental and/or social progress went in to the running for $1000 in prizes.

The winner was a prototype called Friend Safe, at the Palmerston North event. This application will let your friends and family know when you are meant to arrive at your destination safely, and automatically alert them if something goes wrong. Well done to the Friend Safe team!

Thanks to the folks at New Zealand Startup Weekend, iWantMyName and Land Information New Zealand for supporting Mashing of Open Data.
